પીઠીનો મેળો · Pithi no Melo · #HarDishaMeRonak

Gates open 09:00 · the singing begins at the muhurat — the maharaj gives the exact time closer to the date.

For one morning the lawn becomes a small village fair dressed in marigold — striped canopies, hand-painted boards, a flute somewhere behind you, a tulsi plant at the centre of everything, and flowers by the basketful, waiting for their moment. (The name fits, too: VanVihar is one of Krishna's own names.)

The morning belongs to songs and flowers. Disha and Ronak sit together at one baithak; both mothers make the first mark — a tilak — and the elders bless them, seated and unhurried. The turmeric stays a gentle token; nobody ends up yellow. And then the heart of it all: a proper flower shower — baskets of marigold, rose and tuberose passed all round, everyone throwing, the dhol behind it.

Take a striped gamchho at the gate — it shades, it photographs beautifully, it goes home with you. Brunch, goli soda and the sweets of your childhood run alongside the whole time, and it is all wrapped up by lunch — with a whole unhurried afternoon before the wedding.

The songs the family sings that morning will be up here to follow along — in Gujarati and Roman letters. Song lyrics →

What to wear

Pithi no Melo — wear a colour you would not mind losing.

Yellow, orange, marigold, green — any bright colour you love. It blends straight into the flowers, and that is the beauty of it. Cotton if you can, and something you don't mind a mark on — the morning is heavy on flowers and light on turmeric, but marigold season leaves its trace. We hand you a striped gamchho at the gate, so the outfit is finished before you have walked ten steps.

  • Please avoid white and black — neither is worn at our auspicious functions. And cotton over synthetic: turmeric fades out of cotton and never leaves polyester.
  • No zari, no gota, no real jewellery. Wet turmeric ruins metal thread. Leave the good pieces in the room safe.
  • Chappals or kolhapuris, nothing you would mourn. No heels — the lawn is soft and wet turmeric is slippery.
  • A warm layer for nine o'clock. Gir mornings sit around 12°C and you will happily take it off by ten.
  • Do not do your hair. You have a shower, chai and the whole afternoon before the wedding.
  • Elders: wear whatever you are comfortable in. Nobody will be corrected for what they arrive in.

Nothing new needs buying — something bright you already own and would not miss is perfect.

Your questions

What exactly is a Pithi no Melo?

The morning both families bless Disha and Ronak — a tilak of pithi (turmeric) from the closest family, the pithi songs, and a flower shower everyone joins — run as a small village fair with brunch and goli soda alongside.

Do I need to buy anything?

No. Anything bright you already own is perfect — yellow, orange, marigold, green, whatever you like; it blends straight into the flowers. Please just avoid white and black. The striped gamchho we hand you at the gate does the rest.

Will I get turmeric on me?

Barely any — this morning's turmeric is a gentle token: a tilak and a light touch for Disha and Ronak from the closest family. The cousins keep one small, invitation-only turmeric moment among themselves. What finds everyone is flowers, by the basketful.

What if I'd rather not have any?

Perfectly easy — nobody will put turmeric on you. Applying pithi is for the closest family, and only to Disha and Ronak. Your part is the songs, the flower shower, and the shaded seats with chai.

Can the children join?

Half the morning is built for them — a petal corner of their own, the anchor's games on the grass, and front-row duty at the flower shower: every child throws.

When do I shower?

Most guests will only need to brush off petals! If you join the cousins' turmeric moment, a wash point with warm water, besan and dahi waits at the lawn's edge. Room showers run in shifts, because the heaters are solar: elders and children from 11:15, everyone by 2 pm — and there is a whole unhurried afternoon before the wedding.
